Jazz Jam

Cool jazz eminates from beneath an unripened pear tree while a lonely dog wanders about in search of a new friend or perhaps an unwanted slice of pizza. Wine and beer are served in mason jars while a petite child's playground looms in the background. These are just some of the interesting sights and sounds you will encounter at the Wednesday night Jazz Jam at Tantra coffeehouse. The jam starts at 9p.m. and continues till midnight or whenever the last slice of pizza is served. Anyone, who brings an instrument, is welcome to play at this avant garde jam session. Listeners can expect to hear anything from John Coltrane to Thelonious Monk with a wide range of styles that consist of bossa nova, funk, bebop, gypsy jazz and more.

The event is hosted by local Texas State music majors but even some big names come out to this humble jam session. Austin jazz legend Kris Kimura was playing at this past jam session. Kimura was playing with students and offering advice and good conversation for all those who wanted to listen. Kimura is a soon to be graduate of the Texas State School of Music and is well known in the Austin area as a jazz saxophonist and vocalist. This jazz jam is a great place for jazz lovers and players to spot great local talent and local legends while supporting their fellow Texas State students.

Even if you are not a jazz enthusiast you will love the cool atmosphere of hip music, funky people, interesting conversation and old fashioned drinks and pizza. Sit back and enjoy the music while studying or grab a guitar and take a solo over some tunes. Either way this jazz jam is an experience anyone can appreciate.
